What’s in a Word?

"copywriting"From Abracadabra to J.K. Rowling’s Avada Kedavra, the power of words can bring in $3.5 billion dollars worth of box office tickets worldwide. That’s a Fact! How many times do we hear people say, ‘never underestimate the power of words.’ Techie startups and nimble firms have been harnessing the same power to control the Web unlike anything we’ve seen before. We see a simple sales copy page converting into millions of dollars in revenues. Is that even possible? YES. If you know how to write a copy that sells like pancakes.

How to Write a Marketing Copy that Sells

If each word we type equals a dollar, we would be multi-millionaires by now. It’s easy to simply say ‘Buy Brand X’, but today’s market is screaming with products and businesses need to think outside the box and create that one big word to branding stardom. How? Ask yourself:

1. What’s in It for Me?

Focus on what your readers really want, and not on how great your product or service is. With the notoriety of Google and pay-per-click campaigns come the hunt for the holy grail of keywords that people typed on search engines each day. Don’t stuff your copy with senseless keywords and try to write more ‘You’s’ than ‘I’s.’

2. Am I Stylish?

What separates great copy from fluff? Uniqueness. Be genuine with what you write on your marketing copy and list the benefits people will get from your product or service. Write for your reader’s emotion and back it up with facts. Make sure you write your message in a clear, simple, concise and easy-to-understand style.

3. Am I Sensational?

Harnessing the word-of-mouse when it comes to getting viral on the Web is not about gimmicks and blatant self-promotion. Having a catchy headline that speaks for your brand is a MUST when you want to write a copy that sells. For example, California Milk Processor Board got famous for their slogan “Got Milk?” in the 90s. It’s all about mixing and matching.. until you get the words right.

4. How Friendly am I?

You need to make a real connection first with your prospects before you send in your pitch. Why? People buy from those they trust. Then, that’s the time you get more friendly.

5. Am I Taking Power into My Own Hands?

What use is a marketing copy if there’s no call to action? You don’t have to write more than 10,000 words of sales copy that will put your readers to sleep. Try using positive words when nudging your buyers to make that buying decision. Instead of “Don’t Delay!” You may try ” Buy Now. Limited Offer! ” Create the need or a sense of urgency that makes your readers purchase now. If you plan to offer a money-back guarantee, make sure you lay out all the conditions.

As a basic rule, proofread your copy for any mistakes in spelling, terms, grammar, abbreviation or punctuation before you publish them for print or paperless media. When you write a sales copy, think of yourself as a venture capitalist using timing and luck, plus the power of words, to turn the odds to your favor.
